THE MUSLIM MINDSET COLLECTION
Quran 5:55 states:
"Indeed, your ally is Allah, His Messenger, and those who have believed—those who establish prayer and give zakat while they bow [in prayer]."
This verse is widely recognized by Shia Muslims as referring specifically to Imam Ali (AS). The reason for this belief is based on numerous hadiths and historical reports that describe the event leading to the revelation of this verse.
The Event of Giving Charity in Ruku (Bowing)
During the time of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), a poor man entered the mosque and asked for charity, but no one responded. At that moment, Imam Ali (AS), who was in the middle of his prayer, extended his hand while in the position of ruku (bowing) and pointed to his ring, signaling the man to take it as charity. The Prophet (PBUH) witnessed this act, and shortly after, this verse (5:55) was revealed.
Evidence from Sunni and Shia Sources
Many hadith collections, both Sunni and Shia, affirm that this verse was revealed about Imam Ali (AS). Some of the major Sunni scholars who have acknowledged this include:
- **Al-Wahidi** in *Asbab al-Nuzul*
- **Al-Tabari** in his *Tafsir*
- **Al-Suyuti** in *Durr al-Manthur*
- **Ibn Kathir** in his *Tafsir*
Shia scholars universally accept this interpretation, as it aligns with the concept of **Wilayah (divinely appointed guardianship)** belonging to Imam Ali (AS) after the Prophet (PBUH).
Why This Verse Supports Imam Ali’s Leadership
1. "Your ally (Wali) is Allah, His Messenger, and those who believe" – This verse establishes a special authority.
2. "Those who establish prayer and give zakat while bowing" – This describes a specific action, which historical reports confirm was done by Imam Ali (AS).
3. Exclusive Nature of the Act – No other companion of the Prophet is reported to have given charity in ruku, making this a unique mark of Imam Ali’s spiritual and political leadership.
Thus, 5:55 is a key verse in proving Imam Ali's divine leadership, as he was chosen by Allah alongside the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as a protector and guide for the believers.
